Freshwest Design Tent's Café-Bar

22 August 2011

“This year sees the return of Freshwest to Tent London - not with our own stand, but with the honour of designing what is becoming the hub of the London Design Festival; the Tent London Café-Bar.  Over the years Tent has been host to some amazing café designs, but this year we’re going one step further.” says Marcus Beck and Simon Macro, Freshwest

They have set themselves the ambitious task to design and produce everything on show. The lighting above you, the tables and the chairs that you sit on, will all be new pieces showcased for the first time as part of the bustling Tent Café-Bar.

Pink-Clip-Stick Chandelier

The Pink-Clip-Stick Chandelier is a return to Freshwest’s fascination with structures and continues the language of their celebrated Brave New World Lamp for Moooi and the Scaffold Vase for Mitterrand and Cramer gallery, Geneva. Freshwest have designed and developed a miniature scaffold system that locks together 15mm dowel in all directions. The chandelier is their first product to use this multi functional modular system. This simple, yet visually complex structure clips together to produce a 1.7m diameter light. The illumination comes from six 15mm diameter small florescent tubes that sit vertically like the candles on a traditional chandelier.

Sitting below the lighting will be Freshwest’s new tables and chairs from the Angle Iron Range. This furniture is a celebration of humble materials and production techniques, embracing honest details such as exposed welding. Freshwest love the raw aesthetic of the welds, and add, if it’s also cheaper to keep them, then why grind them off. They have used cost affective finishing techniques such as galvanising, giving the Angle Iron Chair an agricultural elegance that is suitable for interior and exterior use. The table tops are not an expensive hardwood, but wide un-joined planks of douglas fir. In these hard times this range is striped back and cost cutting but the combination of raw materials and flashes of colour maintain Freshwest's playful ethos.

You'll have to visit in September to see the whole picture... ;-)
